Shinigami Haken Kyoukai Desu – Opening Walkthrough

Let me go ahead and get this out of the way: IF YOU LEARNED FROM A NON-MIRRORED VIDEO AND DIDN'T TAKE THAT INTO ACCOUNT AND CORRECT FOR IT, YOU'RE DOING IT BACKWARD.

The walk-through is in normal text and my notes are in italics. I tried to make it as simple as possible but if anything isn't clear, just ask me.

Opening Sequence:

The opening sequence is pretty simple. I'll try to break down the separate parts as well.

When the music starts, you'll have to listen for your cue to start (about halfway through the first note sequence). Once you find it, take your right hand to your forehead and salute, stepping in place with your right foot three times. Think 'marching in place'. Try to sync your arm and leg at the beginning, touching your hand to your forehead just as your foot hits the ground the first time.

Step out with your left leg and turn. Make it a noticeable step, bending at the knee. When your foot hits the ground, your left arm from your elbow down should be angled out from your hip (your elbows should be locked in about a 90 degree angle). Your right arm should be back so your hand is near your hip. Shift your legs so that you're turned to the right. When you get there, pause for a moment before changing your arms so that your right is more forward and your left hand is near your hip. When you shift your arms again, right in front than left in front, it should be somewhat stiff, like 'the robot'. When you come out of this move, bring your left leg to your right and salute. Start the sequence again from here, leaving out the stepping in place. When you get to the end again, salute, then move back to your position for the rest of the sequence. This will be different for every Shinigami.

Keep in mind that the dance steps are mirrored. (Left is left and right is right) These stage directions are based on an actual stage performance so when I say 'right' in the stage directions, I mean actual right, not right when viewed from the audience. This also assumes that you've seen the video and have a group to practice with.

Grell moves to the stairs (about three steps up), Eric and Alan move to each side of the stair case, Eric on the left and Alan on the right. Will and Ronald move to the left side of the stage. Unless you are one of the unnamed Shinigami that have a clipboard for this part, simply raise your right arm and mark the count with a flick of your wrist, pointing toward the ceiling.

For Alan/Eric: After the count, simply sit down in your chairs. We'll bring you in later.

For Grell: After the count, simply sit down on the stairs and then sweep your right arm out toward the audience. Go from the outside in and throw some flourish into it, like you're just in love with them all. This syncs up with Ronald's sequence.

For Ronald: (Who has the first line) Point to the audience with your right hand then sweep your arm out and away from you until you're pointing straight off to your side. Then snap your arm back, placing it diagonally across your chest and throwing the horns. (Meaning leaving your pinkie and index finger up and curling the other two down. Basically what Grell does all the time.) You should be standing with your left foot toward your group's Will with your knee slightly bent and your other foot toward the audience.

For Will: (Will's been clapping to the beat through Ronald's sequence.) For him, simply stop clapping when Ronald throws the horns, drop your arms to your sides then raise your right hand to push up your glasses. Drop your hand again and then extend your arm straight out to the audience. Keep your hand open and your fingers loose. (You should be standing with your left leg slightly behind your right, angled with your right side more toward the audience.)

For Grell: Stand on the last word of Will's line and repeat it. One the first syllable, place the first two fingers of your left hand against your head and your right hand on your hip. On the second syllable, pull your left hand up and away from your head and pick your right leg up with your knee angled in slightly. A basic rule for Grell is 'be cute'.

For Will/Ronald: Will and Ronald have a simple marching sequence here. You'll take a few steps back to get into formation (about four) but from there turn to your left and take three steps forward (right, left, right). On the last step, turn to the front on your right foot and stamp your left. Then turn back to the left and step right, left, right and turn to the front again.

For Grell: Quickly sit back down and place your hands on your upper arms. Shift your shoulders back and forth once, right then left. Put your feet on a lower step with your legs a little more than shoulder-width apart. Lean over and rest your left hand on your right knee, placing your left elbow just behind your hand and resting your chin on your fist. Step in place twice with your right leg, keeping your chin on your fist and your elbow on your knee. Stop and raise your right arm, pumping your fist in the air. Try to look like you're trying to look like you were paying attention.

As the two unnamed Shinigami from higher up on the stairs grab Grell and pull her off of the steps, two other Shinigami push Eric and Alan across the stage on their chairs. Since their moves don't sync up until the end, these will be short. When things start to sync up, the unnamed Shinigami should turn the chairs to face each other and start pushing them toward each other, leaving enough room for Grell to pose in between.

For Eric: Sit with your legs uncrossed and your knees bent to keep your feet off of the floor. When the unnamed Shinigami starts to push the chair, wait for a beat then gesture out to the audience with your right hand. Keep your fingers loose at first but curl all but the first two in toward the end of the line. (Synced up) Cross your legs left over right, leaving your ankle against your knee. Pick your right hand up and wag your index finger (flicking your wrist) like you're scolding someone. Stop as you stand. Turn back to your left and move to the stairs for next sequence.

For Alan: Sit with your legs crossed right over left and your knees slightly bent to keep your feet off the floor. Simply keep your right hand on the edge of your glasses frame until your line. (Synced up) Cross your legs left over right this time but loosely, leaving your calf against you knee and check the watch on your left wrist. Tap your watch (much like Eric's scolding) and stop when you stand. Turn back to your right and move to the stairs for the next sequence.

For Grell: Play fight with the two unnamed Shinigami during all this. When they finally push you between the chairs, pose with the first two fingers of your left hand to your forehead, your right hand on your hip and your right leg picked up a bit (bent at the knee and angled in, like on the steps before). Turn back to your left and move to the stairs for the next sequence.
I tried to find one of these. But I couldn't. So I made one.

This is only the first part and yes I will do the whole thing. Even though it's an act of masochism on my part. I know a lot of cosplayers and musical fans that love this dance so I'd figured I'd help out however I could.

Also, this isn't mirrored but it should help if there's something you didn't understand. [link]
